Family Literacy Academies
Volunteer USA is dedicated to breaking the cycle of illiteracy and poverty. Our unique response – the nation’s first network of family literacy academies that draw their power by bringing parents and children together in a caring classroom environment.
Our students are parents working to achieve a better life, with limited knowledge of the English language, and young children who need their parents to help them learn and succeed in school.
Our Family Literacy Impact:
- Our parents gain an average of one-and-a-half grade levels each year they are enrolled.
- Their pre-kindergarten children, who enter struggling with English language skills, improve their total language scores to the high-average range within one year.

Family Literacy Success:
Our academies are helping low-income moms and dads become their child’s first and best teacher. In fact, most parents say after enrolling in an academy they were able to help their child with homework and began to enjoy reading and other educational activities.
